Four members of a local paramilitary unit in southern China have been killed in what authorities described as a “targeted and deliberate attack” on Saturday. The incident took place in a remote district north of Guilin, Guangxi province, during what was reported to be a uniformed group photo session.

According to preliminary statements by local officials, the assailant was a lone individual believed to be of Middle Eastern origin, who “approached the group without warning and opened fire at close range.” The four victims, members of the so-called Tangbao unit—a militia-style civilian group with limited local presence—were pronounced dead at the scene.

Chinese authorities have not yet publicly named the suspect, and no arrests have been announced. Forensic and counterterrorism teams have since been deployed to the area.

At 14:30 Beijing time on Tuesday, a statement posted on an encrypted messaging platform linked to al-Qaeda claimed responsibility for the attack. The statement, attributed to an individual calling himself “Muhammad”, referred to the assault as “a strike against the enemies of the faithful” and warned of future actions.
